It’s not everyday when you look at actor pouring their hearts out in scenes that they have experienced in reality. Michaela Coel has relived her own trauma in ‘I May Destroy You’. The BBC series will air its final episode on August 24 in the U.S. but has already ended in the U.K. on Aug. 13.
‘I May Destroy You’ is the story about a sharp and messy writer, Arabella, who faced a heinous crime. Arabella took a much-needed break from writing and let herself loose for a change. She was later drugged and raped by a complete stranger. At first, Arabella has no memory of the same. But, soon she gets reminded of the night in bits and token. The incident changes her life forever and makes her see every other relationship in new light.
While the entire character and story might not be completely relevant to reality, the main plot, however, is. Michaela Coel faced a similar night in 2016. She went to a party where her drink was roofied and assaulted by a stranger.
Michaela Coel performing the trauma of her real life is chilling and motivating at the same time. Adele expressed that she loved Michaela’s performance. Jane Fonda even changed the algorithm of her feed to appreciate Coel.
