Lifetime announced that it is all set to release its first LGBTQ romantic movie this year. The movie will come out during the holiday season. And, we think it is an amazing way to celebrate the holidays – with love! The movie is called ‘The Christmas Set Up’ and is a part of ‘It’s a Wonderful Lifetime’ programming slate. The cast is yet to be announced but we cannot hold our excitement already!
It is a wonderful initiative by Lifetime to explore such realistic content and include LGBTQ romantic movies in their production. We have been praising the likes of Romeo and Juliet since eternity. It is time that we now go beyond gender specifications when it comes to love! Let Romeo love Jack and Juliet love Rose and let the world know that there’s more to love than we show!
The new movie comes after Lifetime’s last year’s movie, ‘Twinkle All The Way’. The sweet movie also had a gay couple and while it was not a complete LGBTQ romantic movie, it had the same-sex kissing scene. The Christmas Set-Up is a complete LGBTQ romantic movie with a gay couple in the forefront.
The Christmas Set Up Plot
Hugo is a corporate lawyer and is working in New York. For the holidays, he heads home with his best friend, Madelyn. There, Hugo’s mother, Kate, decides to find a suitable boyfriend for Hugo. Her matchmaking skills kick in and she arranges for Hugo to meet Patrick. Patrick has returned from Silicon Valley and guesses what? Hugo has always had a secret crush on Patrick!
The holiday goes extremely well and Kate’s meddling works! Patrick and Hugo are definitely having a great time but, the reality has to hit sometime. The reality here is that the holidays are coming to an end. And with that, the time between Hugo and Patrick as well. Especially because Hugo has received a huge promotion and he has to shift to London for that. He has to now decide between Patrick and the profession.
A Sugar & Spice Holiday
The LGBTQ romantic movie, The Christmas Set Up is not the only movie Lifetime will be releasing this holiday season. A Sugar & Spice Holiday will also be hitting the screens this holiday time. While The Christmas Set Up is special because it is Lifetime’s first LGBTQ romantic movie, A Sugar & Spice Holiday is special too. It is because it is the first movie from Lifetime that features a Chinese-American family!
The story is about Suzie, who is a young architect. Her family is in Maine and when she returns for Christmas, she feels out of place at first. Her grandmother has died and she feels guilty for not being able to give much time to her family. To keep the legacy of her grandmother alive, who was a great baker, Suzie enters a Gingerbread House competition. She teams up with Billy, Suzie’s childhood friend. Now, Suzie has to find the right balance between sugar, spice, and some love.
Makers on LGBTQ Romantic Movies
Lifetime programming EVP, Amy Winter, expressed that she is more than happy to announce that amazing talents are joining Lifetime. She said that with all kinds of movies the platform is releasing, she couldn’t be prouder. It is to note that while on one hand, Lifetime is receiving appreciation, on the other hand, Hallmark is receiving criticism.
The competing Christmas movie channel received some remarks for never releasing any LGBTQ romantic movie and of being exclusive. After it pulled down the ads of a wedding-planning website that featured a lesbian wedding, things went out of hand. The channel tried to justified that the talks surrounding the advertisement were not focused on their content. However, that did not sit well with people and they had to issue an apology later.
