One person’s loss is another person’s gain and that’s true for Hulu and Disney. Disney shelved an episode of Black-ish in 2018 to be politically correct. Well, it’s 2020 and Hulu decided that politically correct or not, the episode deserved an audience and a screen. The episode, ‘Please, Baby, Please’ is now available on Hulu that talks about racism, NFL kneeling, and president Trump.
The episode was filmed in 2017 soon after the election. In the Black-ish episode storyline, Anthony Anderson is taking care of his infant baby. To distract him from the thunderstorm and entertain him, Anthony starts to describe him the condition of America and his concerns for the country. He elaborated on the topic of NFL kneeling to protest police brutality and even the presidency of Donald Trump.
The entire Black-ish episode script did not fit well with the ABC channel. It is to note that Disney back then was in the process of acquiring 21st Century FOX and did not wish to upset the Republicans. When ABC was asked for a comment, they said that kneeling was never the issue. They just felt the story was too political and hence mutually decided to refrain.
As it turns out, the decision was not so mutual after all. Kenya Barris, the writer and director of the episode, quit the sometime later and signed a million-dollar deal with Netflix. Among the entire Black Lives Matter movement, Hulu’s release of the episode is a welcomed move.
