‘Lovecraft Country’ premiered on HBO on August 16, 2020. The show is a perfect pick to satiate the horror-thriller junkie in you as it is full of disturbing allegory and imagery. ‘Lovecraft Country’ is set in the 1950s and follows a black man, Atticus Freeman (Jonathon Majors). He is trying to find his father and is on a road trip that’s full of adventures.
‘Lovecraft Country’ does full justice to the legacy of the legendary writer, H.P. Lovecraft. The show is the perfect amalgamation of America’s ugly truth – racism, bigotry, elitism, etc. – and a fictional paranormal world. ‘Lovecraft Country’ features a segregated city within America for black people.
Atticus is on the journey to find his father along with his uncle (Courtney B. Vance) and family friend, Letitia (Jurnee Smollett). On his road trip, he encounters giant monsters with several eyes and other devil-like creatures. The trio also gets involved in Indiana Jones-like treasure hunt buried deep in a museum.
‘Lovecraft Country‘ is full of remarks that display America’s segregation on the basis of race. It has several old references, re-enacted scenes and voice-overs that will remind of you the unjust the country has been enduring. Whether it’s racist sheriffs, Beyonce’s ‘Lemonade’, or ‘Aunt Jemima pancakes’, there are references hidden everywhere. It is up to the audience to decode them correctly.
