Hold your hearts together because this new info is just in – BTS, Doja Cat, and J Balvin will be performing at MTV VMA 2020! MTV VMA 2020 is going to air on August 30. It will mark BTS’ first VMA performance ever and they will be performing on the new English singly – Dynamite. Dynamite is supposed to release on August 21. Hence, as a great surprise for all BTS fans, they can now watch the band’s first performance on August 30!
Last year, BTS had won their first award at VMA in the best K-Pop category. The category was controversial in itself but, BTS’ win created a history and a foundation for their future relationship with VMA. Doja Cat and J Balvin are also among the first performers of MTV VMA 2020. Interestingly, all these singers and bands have been nominated for different categories at VMA.
BTS, Doja Cat, & J Balvin VMA Nominations
BTS has been nominated in three categories in VMA 2020. Their new single ‘ON’ has been a global hit and grand success. Hence, it made sense that one of the most famous boy bands received acknowledgment and recognition for the same. Their latest single is nominated in the category of Best Choreography, Best Pop Video & Best K-Pop. As BTS was the winner of the last category the previous year, there are a lot of expectations this year as well.
Doja Cat has earned nominations in three VMA categories. They are nominated for Best Song of the Year, PUSH Best New Artist, and Best Direction. The nominations are for her hit single – ‘Say So’. J Balvin is not far behind with four different nominations. Three of those nominations are under the Best Latin Video Category.
BTS VMA 2019 Nominations Controversy
However, the category of Best K-Pop was quite controversial. It was a new category added at MTV VMA 2019 and a lot of people found the addition quite racist. It is obvious where the remarks were coming from. BTS is one of the most famous bands currently in the world. There is absolutely no reason for VMS to create a separate category for South-Korean music.
BTS could have easily made into the list of Best Video of the Year or Best Artist of the Year. It would not have been surprising if MTV VMA had done so. After all, BTS had broken all records globally and gave a significant competition to American, Australian, Canadian nominees. BTS records were better than Jonas Brothers and Taylor Swift and they were at No.1 spot on Billboards.
The racial controversy did not end there. MTV VMA’s lack of knowledge when it comes to Korean music was easily visible when the organizers did not nominate Epik High into any of the categories. Epik High was the first Korean band to perform at Coachella but they received no recognition from VMA. In fact, MTV was quick to congratulate Monsta X’s collaborator, French Montana, and not the Korean band themselves.
MTV VMA 2020
All the nominations for MTV VMA 2020 were announced on jfhjfhrdkfkrd via Twitter Voice Note. It was a new feature introduced by Twitter and VMA was the first to take advantage of it brilliantly. Two new themes were added in the list of categories and both were to acknowledge artists that have worked amazingly during the quarantine.
Leading the nominations are Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande with a total of nine categories each. They are followed by Billie Eilish and Weeknd with a total of six nominations.
Needless to say that the competition is pretty hefty and fans cannot wait to see who the MTV VMA 2020 winners are!
