Britney Spears is in the headlines again and this time, not for something irrational that she did but for what she is going through. It has been 12 years since Britney Spears has lost control of her life and is under legal conservatorship. Yes, Britney was 26 when she gave up or was made to give up the rights on her freedom and stay under the guardianship of her father.
The reason was the consecutive mental breakdowns she was going through that made her seem unfit for the real world. Fans worldwide have once again started the movement #FreeBritney because they worry about the wellbeing of the star. The movement is speeding up as the fans are now petitioning the White House to put an end to conservatorship once and for all.
Britney Spears started doing quite well professionally under the conservatorship. She has released certain music albums that performed extremely well. However, fans were not satisfied. After ‘Britney: Domination’ Las Vegas got canceled, apparently because of the bad health of her father, people started wondering.
Britney went off her social media accounts and later got admitted in a rehab. Rumors have it that Jamie pulled Britney out of the rehearsals and she went rebellious. As a repercussion, she was sent to rehab but way before it even made it on the news.
Even though Britney Spears later updated that everything is fine, concerned fans started questioning more. Britney Spears has been seeking help on social media. A user once commented that if she needs help, she should wear yellow. In one of the following Instagram video, Britney Spears wore a yellow crop top.
Another user commented that she should upload a dove picture if she is not doing fine and Britney did exactly that. The internet is going insane with such clues and wants her conservatorship to be revoked as soon as possible. What do you think about the situation?
What is Conservatorship?
A conservator is someone who takes legal authority of the person who seems unfit to make their own decisions because of their unstable mental health. These mentally incapable people are generally in a coma, diagnosed with dementia, are such other major mental illnesses.
The conservator is the legal guardian who takes care of the person’s finances and health-related matters. Though in Britney Spears’ case, her conservator has taken legal control over her entire life. Jamie Spears, Britney’s father, is Britney’s legal conservator although he has temporarily and partially taken a break from the post.
Jamie supervises and controls all the financial decisions for Britney Spears. Not just that, under Jamie, Britney Spears does not have the right to drive, vote, get married, make business decisions, or even meet people with Jamie’s prior approval!
And for all of this, Jamie gets paid – from Britney’s money. This entire situation, which has been going on for the past 12 years, does not seem right to the people. And hence, for the upcoming hearing held in August, people are petitioning for the removal of the conservatorship.
Britney Spears Breakdown Timeline
In 2004, Britney Spears and her ex-husband Kevin Federline meet and their explosive relationship begins. The same year, they get married and the next year, their first child together, Sean Preston is born. With Sean’s arrival, there came certain instances that question Britney’s parental skills.
She drove with Sean on her laps and without the seatbelt – explained that it was quite normal for her. Sean fell from a height at home – Britney blamed her nanny for that. The pattern started to become obvious and before anyone could figure out anything, Britney announced that she’s pregnant again.
In September 2006, Britney and her husband welcomed their second child, Jayden James and within the next few months, the couple filed for a divorce. At first, both of them wanted sole custody but finally reached a compromise in 2007.
But that was only temporary. During the whole legal battle, Britney Spears was seen partying hard without even her undergarments. In February 2007, Britney Spears shaved her head and checked into the rehab facility multiple times.
She did some more bizarre things in the upcoming months like – fired her manager and mocked him openly; fired her bodyguard on the grounds of inefficiency for picking up a hat; issuing public apology letter; hitting a photographer’s car with an umbrella; and taking her kids out of state (something you aren’t allowed in a custody agreement).
After a few random drug tests, hit and run cases, and a lot of negative publicity, the court grants complete custody of the two kids to Kevin Federline with a visitation allowance granted to Britney.
Britney Spears stayed unstable by breaking more and more traffic laws, allegedly being a culprit of child abuse, and being constantly under the influence of drugs. In 2008, sometime after she refused to hand over her kids to Federline, she was involuntarily admitted to a psychiatric facility and her father was granted temporary conservatorship.
