Country Music Association Awards or CMA announced its nominations on September 1, 2020. As soon as the nominations were out, people were quick to check for all the surprises and snubs for this year nominations. Technically, the ongoing pandemic should not really affect the nominations. The CMA Awards eligibility timeline is from July 2019 to June 2020. That means, only a few months are attacked by COVID-19.
Biggest Snubs of CMA 2020
Marren Morris is nominated in three categories but her album, The Highwomen, did not get nominated for Album of the Year Award. Sam Hunt’s comeback after 2014 ‘Montevallo’ was a highly-anticipated one and he did not disappoint at all. With hit like ‘Kinfolks’ and ‘Body Like A Backroad’, it’s a surprise he didn’t get a single nomination in 2020.
For six years, Dierk Bentley was constantly a part of the CMA Best Male Vocalist nominations. However, even after giving a hit like ‘Living’, his streak broke this year. The same happened with Kelsea Bellerini. After five years of consecutive nominations, the streak broke despite hits like ‘Homecoming Queens’ and ‘The Other Girl’.
Blake Shelton and Garth Brooks, both surprised for not having nominations for ‘Dive Bar’ under the music video of the year award. Blake even missed out nomination for ‘Nobody But You’.
Biggest Surprises of CMA 2020
Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood are nominated for Entertainer of the Year Award. It is for the first time in a decade when more than one woman is nominated under the category. Ashley McBryde, surprisingly made it for the Album of the Year nod for ‘Never Will’.
It is great to have recognition for female singers in the category of Single of the Year as they are still fighting for a place within Country Music. Lambert is nominated for ‘Bluebird’, Maren Morris for ‘The Bones’, and Gabby Barrett for ‘I Hope’. Rascal Flatts received their first nominations after 2017 for Vocal Group of the Year category.
